Log from the Sea of Cortez July 2022

Just returned from a brief fly fishing trip to Loreto BCS with a great group of friends. The weather was hot, the fishing hotter and let's say that there were just a few cool beverages and ceviche involved.

I have been visiting the Sea of Cortez and Baja for many years fishing out of Punta Colorado, Las Barriles, and Loreto. The latter has been a favorite with fairly predictable timing and number of dorado, the occasional sailfish and laid back vibe of this historical capital of Baja Sur. Cabo it's not and thank goodness IMHO. The fishery had waned during the latter part of the last decade due to a decline in forage fish and ocean conditions but recent reports had hinted of a recovery. And despite the lingering pandemic a group of us decided to give it a go. It was worth every canceled and rebooked flight, travel delays and errant luggage. The fishery is back, baby!

Over a brief three days of fishing we boated in excess of 70 - 80 dorado with some bruisers over 30 lbs and many over 20. Landing a thirty pound fish in 100 degree temps is a feat of both endurance and will. Like, will it happen?

We hunted fish in singles and doubles but also had some classic explosive non-stop fishing casting over schools under sargasso patties. While we roamed miles out past Carmen and Coronado Islands, some of the best fishing was a mere two miles off the beach. Sadly, the sailfish and striped marlin had not arrived in sufficient numbers to give chase. Next time!

Great company, great trip. I must rest now.
